St. Louis Arch

The gleaming St. Louis Arch used stud welding for several structural reasons, but another important reason that this technique was used in its construction was to retain the gleaming look of its shining metal, completely uninterrupted. A major draw of stud welding, particularly capacitor discharge welding, is that it leaves the metal surrounding the stud largely untouched, producing a finished result that shines in the sun. 

WWII US Navy Ships

When stud welding was new in the 1930s, it was commonly used by the US Navy as the preferred method of constructing ships. That's because the process produced very tight welds very quickly, increasing output and product quality for shipyards. Also known as the Cooper River Bridge just outside of Charleston, South Carolina, this bridge is famous for being a modern application of stud welding. The reason that stud welding was used for this job was to account for stress from the expansion and contraction of the bridge due to temperature changes, which can be significant if the bridge in question is the third longest cable-stayed bridge in the Western Hemisphere. These welds were also designed to withstand seismic changes as well, further protecting the bridge from the elements. The Paris Las Vegas Hotel

While stud welding provides a strong product meant to last for centuries, they're sometimes used for their good looks, too, like at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in its replica of the Eiffel Tower. These prominent studs give the replica the industrial feel of the original Eiffel Tower even though the original was built prior to the invention of stud welding.
